Airport Passenger Tax and New Departure Tax from Jamaica.

I took a look at my facebook posting yesterday which had this post “With the APD  tax we will pay more to fly to Jamaica and to compound it the Jamaican Govt has increased departure tax immediately what do you say?”  There were over 50 postings due to the emotion and interest the topic generate.

It is only clear that this is not going down well with the International community and there is clear  need for mechanism to be in place to facilitate this new tax (unwarranted Tax) .I will make sure walk with an extra $800 when departing after my visit next week.

There is active lobbying taking place in the UK in regards to the APD  Tax so what next?

It would be interesting to find out what Jamaicans in the Diaspora and also in Jamaica has to say about it?

Indeed the various levied airport taxes is reason to be concerned and alarmed, however what can the traveling public realisticly do? Boycuts, protests? There are operation costs simply just to do business, the profit margins are small, due to the shrinking global economy. Regrettably its the paying public that bears the brunt. Hopefully with a new US administration, reduction in oil prices and, possibly a new UK administration most of these polcies will be reversed. I would hope the Ja public would protest the tax, but I believe due to the present economic climate in the counrty, its only a small segment of the populace frequently uses the airports, hence I gather the vast majority of tax burden is carried by visitors to the island.Maybe this is what the Ja gov was counting on in the decision making.

Would be very happy if you could add a model letter for us to use to lobby our member of Parliament, seeing that you have more indepth insight into this unwanted tax.

Angelee which member of parliament are you talking about? There are two issues, 1) The APD Tax which have been lobbied on by the High Commission, The Diaspora Org, and FFBJ 2) The New Departure Tax by the Jamaican Govt.

Which letter are you talking about? The APD letters are in cirulation for MPs and FFBJ sent it out some time ago.

The Govt. of Jamaica is still defending the Dept tax rise

Sylbourne the radio jamaia article is very disingenuous. If the allegations of the Ja govt are true, then why isn’t the govt. trying to recoup the US $9.00 from the appropiate entities? I find the reason set forth by the Ja govt. dubious.

The question is why something so legitimate is creating a bad word and is looking distasteful. It maybe because the motive is wrong. Nothing is wrong in principle in raising dept tax but it is the way how they went about doing it.
